New, improved health services for Derby
FEEDBACK from patients, GPs, MPs and voluntary organisations has led Southern Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group (SDCCG) to set up two new support and advice hubs as part of improvements to patient services offered at the Derby Walk-In Centre, in Osmaston Road, and the Derby Open Access Centre, in St Thomas Road.
Following conversations with the local community the Derby Walk in Centre will have a GP on site and to recognise the new improved service the site will be renamed Derby Urgent Care Centre (DUCC) from April 1st. As well as the support and advice hub the new improved services will include the introduction of an X-ray service later this year and the same services will continue to be provided to allow people to be treated with sprains and strains and minor burns or scalds.
Derby Open Access Centre will also change how it provides its services in response to patients needs. The current building will house the doctor’s surgery, which will be called St Thomas Road Surgery and the new Support and Advice Hub. Patients will be able to access the Support and Advice Hub and a clinician will assess patients needs and if necessary refer them for treatment or sign post them to more appropriate service.
The improvements follow SDCCG’s announcement last year that OneMedicalGroup had won the tender to run the two centres after successfully running the Derby Open Access Centre for the past seven years.
Catherine Bainbridge, senior commissioning manager at SDCCG, said: “We’ve been out to talk to our local communities, listened to their views and acted on this by making these changes. The improved services at both sites will ensure people get the best help they need at the right time and place.
“It has been well reported that our accident and emergency departments have been under pressure and one of the aims of the new urgent care centre will be to provide an alternative place for patients with minor injuries to get treatment quickly and locally.”
Derby Urgent Care Centre will continue to offer its current services from 8am to 8pm, every day of the year. Work is now being done to improve the building and install the X-ray facilities. St Thomas Road Surgery which will house the Support and Advice Hub will be developed to improve access. Opening times at the centre will not be affected and will continue to open Monday to Friday from 8am until 6.30pm and weekends from 8am until 8pm.
Mrs Bainbridge added: “Following conversations with local people we understood that there was a need for a support and advice hub. This will provide the community with a resource to support people staying healthy and well.”
Rachel Beverley-Stevenson, Chief Executive of OneMedicalGroup, said: “As a patient first organisation, we are looking forward to delivering these enhanced services for the Derby community and help patients access the correct services across the two sites.”
The support and advice hubs open in both centres on April 1st and will be staffed by a dedicated patient advisor and volunteers. The staff in the hubs will be able to support patients registering with a local GP practice of their choice, access lifestyle services such as smoking cessation or weight management and signpost them to local community organisations.
The hubs will be available for use by the community and voluntary organisations. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at the support and advice hubs contact Donna Shacklock on 01332 275610.
